HISTORY OF LAWSON FORD

I believe this is the most accurate history information pertaining to Lawson Ford and it starts in the year 1860 and continues up to the year 1930. This history information includes Phil Ford, his stepfather and also his birth mother, Rachael.
History fact: The black race did not originate in North America.
The Given (first) names, and especially the Sur (last) names that exist for someone of the black race were/is not the name from the actual first generation, but instead may be a name that a person was given after being unloaded from a ship and sold.
The slave owner would give the slave a first name, hence that became "your given name". A slave obtained or selected a Sur name when he or she obtained their freedom. History indicates that most slaves selected or were given the last (Sur) name of their previous slave owner.
Historic records during the slavery years sometimes identified a person who was once a slave but won or bought his/her freedom as a "Freedman".
A "Mulatto" was legally considered to be an individual with mixed black and white heritage, but the interesting thing about a "mulatto" is that person was always the child born to a black woman but was fathered by a white man.
It is a historic fact that the slave owners and the sons of slave owners were sleeping with their female slaves and the black female had no choice but to submit.
At times a female slave was "provided for" important visitors to the plantations. Other times, a white male simply made use of the fact he was white and the woman was a slave.
Federal Census Reports when indicating the year of birth often used the word "abt" (about) and then stated the year. This applied to all races.
The Federal Census Reports are officially documented information and the information on the reports should have been obtained from the individual or the head of the household or plantation where each report was taken.

In order to understand the history of the Lawson Ford family, it was necessary to look at different family names, Ford, Greenhaw, McGee, Sheppard, Gains and Meek.
Lawson Ford was born a Greenhaw. He was the child of a white man named (Thomas) Greenhaw and a black woman whose maiden name was Rachel McGee.
Rachael McGee had 2 sons by a white man named (Thomas) Greenhaw prior to her marrying Phillip (Phil) Ford. Her two sons, Lawson and Jackson, assumed the Ford name from that marriage.
Lawson Ford married a woman whose maiden name was Margaret Sheppard.
Margaret Sheppard was the daughter of a man named Joel Sheppard and a woman whose maiden name was Mary Gains or Mary Meek, (or Mary Daphne). There is an Arkansas marriage record showing that a man named Joel Sheppard married a woman named Dafney Meek on 16 March 1873. (Date the marriage was legalized)
In 1920 a Daphne Sheppard who was a widow and 70 years old is living with a family and the head of household is a man named Sam Gains who is listed as Daphne’s brother. It is likely that the mother of Daphne had children by two different men, Gains and Meek.
All Federal Census Records for the state of Arkansas up until the year 1870 are separated into two groups, “Schedule 1” and “Schedule 2”.
The total number of individuals on the bottom of each report is further identified by “white” males or “white” females or by “colored” males or “colored” females.
Group one heading reads “Schedule 1 Free Inhabitants”.
The Schedule 1 Free Inhabitants reports do include free black or mulatto.
Group two heading reads “Schedule 2 Slave Inhabitants”.
On the Schedule 2 reports the information list the name of slave owner, number of slaves, age of each slave, sex of each slave, color of each slave, if that slave is a fugitive from the state, number of manumitted slaves (if owner has released from bondage/slavery), if that slave is deaf & dumb, blind, insane or idiotic and the number of slave houses.
Starting in the year 1865, thousands of former slaves from 17 Southern states had their plantation marriages “legalized.”
The records of these marriages (marriage certificates, marriage licenses, monthly reports of marriages and more) are among the most important records for finding black family members before and after the Civil War. These records are found on the Ancestry website under “Freedmen’s Bureau Marriage Records”. States represented in this collection are Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
In this Lawson Ford history report, a name in parenthesis is the maiden name, nickname, assumed name or a different spelling of the name for that person.

Ford Slave Owner:
Census Slave Inhabitants Report dated 20 June 1860 for Liberty Township, Ouachita County, Arkansas; list a slave owner named Hilliard Ford.
There were a total of 12 slaves, 3 females and 9 males living on this plantation.
Census Slave Inhabitants Report dated 19 September1860 for Jackson Township, Union County, Arkansas, lists a slave owner named John Ford.
There were a total of 19 slaves, 13 males and 6 females living on this plantation.
Land records state that a John H. Ford (John Hilliard Ford), age 63, was the registered owner of over 1,000 acres of land in Ouachita County and Union County.
Total Real Estate value in 1860 for this land is $9,500.00.
Total Personal Estate value (including slaves) for John H. Ford is $30,000.00.
One slave in Ouachita County is a male, 8 years of age, and is listed as “mulatto” race.
It is very possible that this slave is Phillip (Phil) Ford because the age of 8 years would make him born about 1851 or 1852 and race is “mulatto” which matches later information about Phil Ford.
All Arkansas slave records for the year 1860 were reviewed and only 3 male “Mulatto” slaves that would have been 8 or 9 years old were found and only 1 was in southern Arkansas (Ouachita County).
Union County and Ouachita County are connecting counties in Arkansas.
Greenhaw Slave Owner:
Census Report dated 16 July 1860 for Johnson Township, Union County, Arkansas list a slave owner named J. D. Greenhaw who was born about 1814 in Alabama as the owner of eight (8) slaves, 5 females and 3 males. This J. D. Greenhaw is also listed as an innkeeper and had 15 white individuals also working for him, 10 males and 5 females.
Arkansas land records for 1860 list a Jackson Greenhaw as the owner of two parcels of land in Union County, Arkansas. One parcel of land consists of 40 acres and the other parcel is 200 acres. The real estate value is $1,600.00. Personal estate (including slaves) value is $8,000.00.
Jackson Greenhaw, age 46, is married with 3 sons and 2 daughters. One son is named Joseph, age 17, and he was born in 1843. The other son is named Thomas, age 15, and he was born in 1845. Both sons were born in Arkansas.
One of these sons could be the father of Lawson (Greenhaw) Ford. Lawson was born about the year 1873. Census Reports for Lawson Ford state that his mother and father were both born in Arkansas.
Additional possibility that this could be the correct Greenhaw is that the brother of Lawson Greenhaw was named Jackson Greenhaw before both boys changed their last name to Ford.
Meek Slave Owner
Census Report dated 20 September 1860 for Corni Township, Union County Arkansas lists a slave owner named James Meek. James Meek real estate value is listed at $9,198.00 and his personal estate value (including slaves) is listed at $22,328.00.
He was the listed owner of 10 slaves of which 6 were females and 4 were males. Two of the females were listed as 8 years old and their race is “mulatto”. One female is 6 years old and the race is “black”. The woman (Mary) who married Joel Sheppard was born about the year 1852 and would have been around 8 years old in 1860.
No “free” black Rachael McGee in the1860 Census Report for Arkansas could be found.
McGee Slave Owner:
In 1860, only one McGee could be found that owned a slave and lived in Union County, Arkansas. This was a man named James McGee and he owned 80 acres of land.
He had only one slave and this slave was a female, 18 years old.
This is unlikely to be the mother of Rachael McGee (wife of Phil Ford) who was born in 1854 because this would mean that Rachael’s mother would have given birth at the very young age of 11 or12.
McGee Slave Owner:
Census Report dated 25 June 1860 for Catahoula County in Louisiana show a slave owner named Caturo McGee as the owner of 15 slaves and one is a female age 5.
Census Report dated 20 July 1860 for Morehouse County in Louisiana show a slave owner named C. L. McGee as the owner of 32 slaves and two are females, age 6.
Census Report dated 6 September 1860 for Ouachita (County) Parish in Louisiana show a slave owner named T. L. McGee as the owner of 56 slaves.
There were 10 female slaves who were 5 years old
McGee in 1870
Census Report dated 25 September 1870 for the state of Louisiana show that a black female whose name is Rachel McGee, 14 years of age, born about 1856, is living on a farm with a white family. The farm is owned by a Sarah McGee who is a widow and has 2 sons and 1 daughter and they all have the last name of McGee.
One of these 5 or 6 year old females could be Rachael McGee because she was born about 1854 and the man who would later become her husband (Phil Ford) place of birth is listed as Louisiana on the 1880 and 1900 Census Reports. Phil Ford may have been raised with Rachael before he somehow ended up in Arkansas.
Gains Slave Owner
Census Reports for 1850 and 1860 did not show anyone named Gains as owning slaves in Union County Arkansas, but do show several Gains that were slave owners in other counties in Arkansas.
Sheppard Slave Owner:
Census Report dated 15 September 1860, Union County, Arkansas, list a white slave owner named Mary Sheppard who is a widow and 70 years old.
She is the owner of 13 slaves. Value of real estate is $5,000.00.
Value of personal estate (including slaves) is $24,530.00.
One male slave, 10 years old in 1860, mulatto race, could be Joel Sheppard.
There were three slave owners named Sheppard living in Union County, Arkansas in 1860 but only one had a male slave that was 10 years old and was listed as mulatto race (same as Joel Sheppard). Joel Sheppard was the father of Margaret (Sheppard) Ford.
Census Report dated 23 June 1870 for Jackson Township, Union County, Arkansas.
Phillip Ford who would later marry Rachael (McGee) is living and working on a farm in Union County, Arkansas. His occupation is farm laborer.
Phillip Ford is listed as Mulatto race, 19 years old and born about 1851 in Arkansas (?).
Phillip can not read or write according to the report.
Phillip is working on the same farm that a Joel Sheppard is working on.
Phillip’s stepson, Lawson, years later would marry Joel’s daughter, Margaret Sheppard.
Census Report dated 23 June 1870 for Jackson Township, Union County, Arkansas.
Joel Sheppard is single, age 19, born about 1851, is working and living on a farm in Jackson Township, Union County, Arkansas. Joel’s race is listed as black.
Joel Sheppard occupation is listed as a farm laborer.
Joel’s father place of birth is listed as USA and his mother is unknown.
Joel can not read or write according to the report.
Joel would later marry Mary Gains (Mary Daphne Gains) or (Mary) Dafney Meek.
Census Report dated 8 June 1880 for Johnson Township, Union County, Arkansas.
Phil Ford is married and living on a farm with his wife and kids.
Phil’s occupation is listed as a farmer.
Phil’s place of birth is listed as Louisiana on this report (not Arkansas).
Because of this Louisiana connection, it is possible that one of the females that lived on a plantation in Louisiana is Rachael McGee.

Joel Sheppard is married to a woman named Mary.
Based on various census reports, her name could have been Mary Daphne.
The report indicates that Joel and Mary can not read or write.

Union County, Arkansas marriage records show that a Joel Sheppard marriage to a woman named Dafney Meek was “legalized” in 1873. Based on the age of their son, Isaac, they were living together before the marriage was “legalized”.
There were several black families with the last name of Meek living in Jackson Township, Union County, Arkansas in the year 1870.
There were no black families with the last name of Gains listed on Census reports for Jackson Township, Union County, Arkansas in the year 1870.
It is very possible that Mary Daphne’s last name was Meek instead of Gains before she married Joel Sheppard.

The farm and land consists of 79.98 acres.
Arkansas Land Records show Joel Sheppard purchased the land on 6 February 1899.
Joel and his wife have been married for over 20 years (last number unreadable on report).

Afnie Sheppard, wife, black race, born in Alabama (no birth year). It is possible that her complete name was Mary Daphne, that could be why some census reports list her as Mary and this census report list her as Afnie (for Daphne) (or Dafney).
Afnie (Mary Daphne) (Dafney) is the mother of 4 children but only 3 are alive in June 1900. Julia may be the name of the dead child.
Shulie Sheppard, grandson, black race, age 9, born July 1891
Nancie Sheppard, daughter-in-law, widow, (no birth information listed), mother of 3 kids.
Nancie was probably married to Isaac Sheppard, who was the son of Joel and Mary. Union County Arkansas marriage record show an Ike Sheppard married a woman named Nan Johnson on 19 November 1892.
No record of Isaac Sheppard exists starting in June 1900.
